CANDON CITY – Alas Pilipinas guns for a respectable finish when it faces Iran in the classification round of the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup here at the Candon City Arena Sunday, June 14.
Following back-to-back losses that ended their medal bid, the Nationals eye a seventh place finish in the continental joust when they meet the Iranians at 9:30 a.m.
Led by Alyssa Valdez, the world No. 50 Filipina hitters (2-3) and the No. 44 Iranians (2-3) both placed fourth in their respective pools.
Valdez, a 32-year-old national team returnee, keeps her head high despite missing out a spot in the knockout rounds.
“Marami pang maabot ‘yong mga bata rito [sa Alas], so hopefully, magandang experience ‘to para sa kanila,” said Valdez after Alas’ straight-set loss to the Yi-Jen Liao-skippered Taipei.
If Alas wins, it will be its second seventh-place finish in the annual competition after winning back-to-back medals in the past two seasons, highlighted by a silver in Vietnam last year.
Valdez, Ces Molina, Jovelyn Gonzaga, Alyssa Solomon, Kyle Negrito, Nina Ytang, Thea Gagate, Royse Tubino and Ara Galang are expected to be at the forefront of attack against Iran's No. 1 scorer Fatemeh Khalili Chermahini.
The tournament is presented by Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the City of Candon Mayor Eric D. Singson.
“Kahit na they [Alas] lost three games, the people will still be here, still. I’m sure of that,” said Singson. “We are very grateful of the full support of the Philippine Sports Commission headed by chairman Gregorio."
“The PSC support ensures the successful staging of this international tournament that Candon City is representing for the country. This will encourage us further to be more aggressive in hosting sports event in our aim to position Candon City as sports hub in Northern Luzon," he added.
“Historic hosting here with Mayor Eric here. It’s not easy to cater 12 teams and host an AVC Cup… we would like to say it was excellent hosting and hopefully, we can see more high, premium events here, the VNL here, pag may airport na,” said AVC president Ramon “Tats” Suzara.
