Information about a foldable iPhone has been circulating for months. But it was in December last year when we got what it may actually look like, through a now-deleted YouTube video by Jon Prosser.
Prominent leaker, Ming-Chi Kuo, has stated the device will roll out in late 2026 or early 2027.
Now as we draw closer to September and October, the months when Apple typically announces their newest iPhones, more and more leaks and speculations on what the foldable iPhone will be takes centerstage.
So far, all the leaked content reveals the foldable iPhone will take on a fold format, or a book format, rather than a flip phone. We expect this device to be about as thick as two iPhone Airs piled on top of each other. We can even speculate the iPhone Air was even made possible because of the R&D placed into building the foldable device. We can even go as far as to guess that the iPhone Air might even be half a trial on how the foldable iPhone may fare in real-world situations.
It is also not absolutely certain what the new iPhone will be called. Some point out that it could be the iPhone Fold. But knowing how Apple works, they will tend to stay away from others who are using similar names and would create their own brand distinction. So far, according to others, this new device will be called the iPhone Ultra.
Which makes sense, given that Apple already has an Ultra device, being the Watch Ultra. Going forward, let’s keep calling it the iPhone Ultra.
What all the leaked content shows so far is that the outer screen may be about 5.3 to 5.5-inches, which is about the size of an iPhone Mini, which is very slightly larger than iPhone 5. The inner screen may be 7.6 to 7.8-inches, which is slightly smaller than an iPad Mini.
Basically, what we’re getting here is an iPhone that can turn into an iPad. And because of this, we expect the iPhone Ultra will have powerful multi-tasking capabilities and have more of an iPad look and UI feel.
The iPhone Ultra is expected to be a high-end device. So we can expect Apple will not cut any corners to lower the price. Therefore, we can expect the iPhone Ultra to ship out with an A20 Pro chip with a C2 modem.
Face ID may not be present in the iPhone Ultra. Some leaks are suggesting that the components that make a Face ID cannot be shrinked enough, which is somewhat odd considering Face ID is supported by the iPhone Air–further suggesting the possibility that the iPhone Ultra, when unfolded, is thinner than an iPhone Air.
Instead, we will get the good ole Touch ID, which is, in my book, fine. Personally, I very much enjoy the Touch ID more than the Face ID.
Do let us know, is the iPhone Ultra something you will get? Will you pre-order it? Or will you wait for a few months, even as far as an iPhone Ultra 2 before seriously considering it?
