Supreme Court's enduring legacy: Justice for all

Today’s celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Supreme Court of the Philippines is an opportune time to reflect on the indispensable role of the nation's highest tribunal in preserving democracy, defending constitutional liberties, and ensuring that justice remains blind to power, wealth, and political influence.
For 125 years, the Supreme Court, currently led by Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, has stood as the final arbiter of legal disputes and the ultimate guardian of the Constitution. Its decisions have shaped the course of the nation, defined the limits of governmental authority, and protected the rights of citizens in moments of both stability and crisis. Through changing administrations and shifting political landscapes, the Court has remained a vital pillar of democratic governance.
The judiciary occupies a unique position in government. Unlike the executive branch, it commands no army. Unlike the legislature, it enacts no laws. Its strength rests solely on the public's faith that judges and justices will decide cases according to the Constitution and the rule of law. That trust is among the most precious assets of any democratic society, and it must be preserved at all costs.
Throughout its history, the Supreme Court has issued landmark rulings that have tested the nation's commitment to constitutional principles. In cases involving executive authority, legislative processes, civil liberties, and national patrimony, the Court has repeatedly been called upon to determine not what is politically expedient but what is constitutionally correct. Such decisions often invite praise from some sectors and criticism from others. Yet the Court's duty is not to satisfy public opinion. Its duty is to uphold the law.
This responsibility demands courage. The true test of judicial independence arises when decisions are unpopular, when political pressures intensify, or when powerful interests seek favorable outcomes. At such moments, the Constitution must remain the Court's only compass. A judiciary that bends to influence weakens public confidence and erodes the foundations of democratic governance. A judiciary that remains steadfast strengthens the Republic itself.
Equally important is the Court's obligation to ensure that justice is accessible to all. The Constitution promises equal protection under the law, a principle that must be more than an aspiration. Every Filipino who enters the halls of justice—whether rich or poor, influential or ordinary—must be assured that fairness, not privilege, will determine the outcome of legal disputes. The legitimacy of the judiciary depends not only on the correctness of its decisions but also on the public's belief that those decisions are rendered impartially.
In an era marked by rapid spread of information, political polarization, and heightened public scrutiny, maintaining that confidence has become even more challenging. Transparency, accountability, integrity, and efficiency are not purely institutional goals. These are what the public expects from the judiciary. This is why it is incumbent upon the judiciary to continuously strive to meet these expectations while preserving its independence from external pressures.
The declaration of June as Judiciary Month is therefore both timely and meaningful. It provides an opportunity for Filipinos to better appreciate the judiciary's role in safeguarding rights, resolving disputes peacefully, and ensuring that constitutional boundaries are respected. More importantly, it reminds the nation that the rule of law is sustained not only by courts but also by citizens who value justice and democratic institutions.
As the Supreme Court marks its 125th year, it carries a legacy built by generations of jurists who understood that justice must never be selective and that constitutional principles must never be compromised. The challenges of the future will undoubtedly test the institution anew.
May the Court continue to stand above partisanship, remain faithful to the Constitution, and uphold the enduring promise that in the Philippines, justice belongs to all and favors none.
