Security is now in place for the 128th Independence Day amid rumors and speculations of threats especially in the Senate and at the Malacañang, the Philippine National Police said.
But PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said there is no validated threat monitored so far in relation to the Independence Day observance, noting that nationwide deployments and coordination with local government units are aimed at ensuring peaceful and orderly celebrations across the country.
He said police regional offices have activated their respective security plans in coordination with local government units, event organizers, and partner agencies.
In Metro Manila, around 12,000 personnel and force multipliers and security coverage is focused on Rizal Park, the Parada ng Kalayaan route, Bonifacio Monument, Mausoleo de los Veteranos de la Revolucion, Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine, Malacañang area, and the US Embassy vicinity.
“This is an annual activity that we prepare for every year. We trust our commanders and personnel for real-time security adjustments based on threat assessments, intelligence gathering and situation on the ground,” said Nartatez.
He said police forces will be on alert and part of this is the presence of standby forces that will be immediately tapped for any eventuality. The PNP has intensified security preparations nationwide for flag-raising ceremonies, wreath-laying rites, parades, and cultural presentations.
Security measures are also in place at the Senate and the House of Representatives areas in coordination with their respective officials and security officials for possible protest actions in relation to the current political situation.
Nartatez said the communication line between the Senate and the PNP is always open, along with officials of other government agencies for June 12 activities.
“We are ready. We are continuously monitoring the situation and we assure the Filipino people of the PNP’s presence and readiness as the country celebrates its Independence Day,” said Nartatez.
