Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso has ordered the inspection of all schools, old buildings, and government structures in the city to strengthen earthquake and disaster preparedness.
The directive was issued to City Engineer Armando Andres during the mayor’s regular directional meeting last Monday and reiterated on Wednesday, June 10, during the Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MCDRRMC) meeting.
“Engineer Andres, please continue as per the directive last Monday that all our schools, old buildings, and government buildings must be inspected,” Domagoso said.
Inspection reports are to be submitted to MCDRRMC chief Arnel Angeles for evaluation and appropriate action.
Domagoso said the move forms part of Manila’s broader disaster preparedness efforts, noting that Metro Manila remains vulnerable to a potential major earthquake, commonly referred to as “The Big One.”
The mayor also directed Angeles and the MCDRRMC to coordinate with disaster response agencies in Cotabato, General Santos City, and Sarangani Province following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake reported off the coast of Maasim, Sarangani.
He said Manila is ready to extend assistance if needed.
“Trying to be a good neighbor to our fellow Filipinos,” Domagoso said.
