The House of Representatives has raised at least P9.29 million in donation pledges for the victims of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Sarangani and nearby provinces in Mindanao.
This was shared by Akbayan Party-list Rep. Chel Diokno during a press conference Thursday, June 11 by the House prosecution panel in Vice President Sara Duterte's upcoming Senate impeachment trial.
Diokno said a total of 139 members of the House have made pledges so far for the sake of those affected by the calamity. He said the solon-prosecutors were among those who have promised to chip in.
“Even though we are in the middle of preparing for the impeachment trial, what happened (Mindanao earthquake)...is not far from our minds and conscience,” Diokno said.
Diokno, who is part of the prosecution team, was responding to the apparent narrative online that the House was prioritizing the moves to secure a conviction against Duterte over helping the victims of the strong earthquake.
Referring to the donation drive, the Akbayan lawmaker said the House members decided to band together.
“There have been over a hundred members of the House who have already pledged support, some of them even their own personal resources, to help the victims of the earthquake disaster.
“Under the leadership of Speaker [Faustino] Bojie Dy, the members of the House of Representatives are coming together,” Diokno said.
He said the House can fulfill its constitutional duty in the impeachment process while also responding to the humanitarian needs of quake-hit communities.
“Impeachment is one of our duties under the Constitution, but helping the victims of this earthquake is a humanitarian duty. We do not forget that,” he added.
“We are doing everything we can to make sure that those efforts will reach the affected families and communities,” Diokno further said.
The collective relief effort is on top of assistance being extended by lawmakers through their districts, local government partners, and constituents, as per Diokno.
“Our service continues,” he underscored.
Diokno said the House will continue preparing for the impeachment trial while also performing its legislative and humanitarian duties.
“While we are in the middle of preparing for this constitutional trial, we are also not forgetting our duties to legislate, and of course our duties to provide as much assistance and support as we can to those who were affected by the earthquake."
