The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has extended condolences to the family of student-athlete Rene Clert Baterbonia, a former beneficiary of the government’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).
The 4Ps is a conditional cash transfer program for low-income households, providing financial support on the condition that children attend school and receive basic health care services.
DSWD said Baterbonia belonged to a 4Ps household in Talacogon, Agusan del Sur.
The family exited the program in January last year after being assessed as having achieved improved living conditions and self-sufficiency.
DSWD-Caraga described 19-year-old Baterbonia as a dedicated student-athlete whose discipline and achievements were recognized within his school community and among fellow 4Ps monitored children.
“As we mourn his untimely passing, we also honor the dedication and spirit he displayed both on the court and as a proud member of the 4Ps community. His journey as a student-athlete remains an inspiration to many young Caraganons,” DSWD-Caraga Regional Director Mari-Flor Dollaga said in a statement.
Baterbonia’s basketball career included a standout performance in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa, where he helped lead the Davao Region to its first-ever championship title.
He later played for the Philippine delegation that won the basketball gold medal at the 14th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) School Games in Brunei Darussalam in November 2025.
He also concluded his high school stint with a silver-medal finish in the 2026 National Basketball Training Center Finals and another Palarong Pambansa campaign before later joining Ateneo de Manila University’s basketball program.
He died in a drowning incident in Aurora on June 8 during a team-building activity as a member of the university’s basketball team.
