Filipinos overwhelmingly support working with like-minded nations to defend the country’s sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), a new survey commissioned by the Stratbase Institute revealed.
Pulse Asia’s nationwide poll showed that 86 percent of respondents agreed the Philippines should cooperate with allies such as the United States, Japan, Australia, Canada, and South Korea in upholding the 2016 arbitral award.
Mindanao registered the highest support at 91 percent, followed by the National Capital Region at 90 percent.
Stratbase president Victor Andres “Dindo” Manhit said the findings highlight the public’s recognition that alliances are vital to preserving independence.
“Filipinos clearly recognize that upholding the 2016 arbitral award and strengthening cooperation with like-minded nations are essential components of preserving our independence in the 21st century,” he stressed.
The survey, conducted from May 3 to 7 among 1,500 respondents, was released ahead of the June 12 Independence Day celebration and the 10th anniversary of the arbitral ruling that invalidated China’s sweeping claims in the South China Sea.
Respondents also identified preferred partners in defending the WPS, with 84 percent choosing the United States (US), 67 percent Japan, 57 percent Australia, 51 percent Canada, and 44 percent South Korea.
Support for the US and Japan rose slightly compared to a similar survey in December 2025.
Manhit said the results send a clear message to government: “The Philippines must remain firm in defending its rights while working closely with allies and partners that uphold international law and support a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific," he said.
He added that the survey underscores the urgency of adopting a comprehensive national strategy that combines diplomacy, credible defense, and strong partnerships to safeguard Philippine sovereignty.
Such an approach, he noted, would ensure that future generations inherit a nation that is secure and respected internationally.
The Stratbase Institute emphasized that the public’s overwhelming support for alliances should guide policymakers in strengthening ties with democratic partners, especially as tensions in the WPS continue to test the country’s resolve.
