DAVAO CITY – The 21st Davao City Council passed a resolution on Wednesday, June 10, calling for a fair, transparent, and independent inquiry on the deaths of Ateneo de Manila University basketball players Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
Proponent Councilor Antoinette Principe, chairperson of the Committee on Education, Science, and Technology, emphasized in a privilege speech that the tragedy raises legitimate questions about the safety and protection of student-athletes.
The city council paid tribute to Baterbonia, a 19-year-old basketball player who helped the Davao Region Athletic Association Eagles win their first gold medal in the secondary boys' basketball tournament at the 2025 Palarong Pambansa in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.
Principe said Baterbonia earned recognition as one of the competition's most outstanding athletes during the 2025 Palarong Pambansa, and the opportunity many young athletes dream of –
being recruited to play for AdMU.
"Today, instead of celebrating his future, we mourn his passing," Principe said, describing Baterbonia as "a symbol of hope" whose story inspired many young people to dream beyond poverty and hardship.
Baterbonia and Adili drowned during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8. Principe and the city council condoled with the families of the two athletes.
"As a public servant, I grieve. But as a mother, I ache," the councilor said, citing concerns raised by Baterbonia's mother regarding the circumstances surrounding his death. She added that parents deserve answers to their questions.
The councilor raised questions about what happened, whether the tragedy could have been prevented, whether proper precautions were taken, whether the risks were clearly explained, and whether the athletes were adequately protected.
Principe emphasized that these are not unreasonable questions. "These are the questions of every parent who entrusts a child to a school, a coach, an institution, or a training program," she added.
She noted police reports that the incident appears to be accidental and that investigations are still ongoing but Principe stressed the need for a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Principe noted that public concern has continued to grow following reports and testimonies on the intensity of certain athletic team-building activities and training programs. Thus, a comprehensive, impartial, and transparent investigation is a must, she said.
Principe cautioned against baseless accusations and trial by publicity but stressed that legitimate questions should not be silenced. "Seeking the truth is not an attack on any institution, but a responsibility to both the dead and the living."
"If there was no negligence, facts should clear all doubts. If mistakes were made, those responsible should be held accountable. If safety measures were lacking, reforms should be made," the councilor said.
To prevent similar tragedies in the future, Principe called on the government and institutions to prioritize the safety and welfare of young athletes in all training sessions, camps, competitions, and team-building activities.
Principe and the rest of the city council agreed to provide assistance and support to Baterbonia's grieving family during this difficult time. "Baterbonia made Davao and Mindanao proud and inspired young athletes to believe in their potential."
"Although his life was tragically cut short, his legacy would live on in every young player who dreams of wearing a jersey, representing their region, and pursuing excellence with courage and humility," she said.
Principe said Baterbonia was supposed to receive recognition, but would instead be honored with the city's gratitude, respect, and prayers. She also offered prayers for Adili and for peace for all those mourning the tragedy.
The councilor said that while Baterbonia cannot be brought back, his memory can be honored by seeking the truth, protecting future athletes, and ensuring that no parent is left with unanswered painful questions.
