SM Cares turned Earth Day into a meaningful community conversation through #SaveWATTMatters, a special Earth Day event held at SM City North EDSA – The Annex. Bringing together partners, advocates, students, families, and mallgoers, the activity encouraged everyone to see that caring for the planet can begin with simple, everyday energy-saving choices.
Mounted under the SM Green Movement, the initiative championed “Earth Day Every Day at SM,” reinforcing sustainability as a daily commitment. The program was designed to empower communities in taking steps to help shape a sustainable future, in line with the global Earth Day theme “Our Power, Our Planet.”
“Through our Corporate Social Responsibility arm, SM Cares, SM initiated #SaveWATTMatters as a way to encourage easy, simple habits on energy efficiency,” said Joaquin San Agustin, SM Supermalls Executive Vice President for Marketing. “We believe sustainability becomes more meaningful to individuals and households when they see how it relates to their everyday lives. Through this effort, we also hope to show them that making a real difference is easy and attainable when these actions are done consistently together.”

The event was opened by SM North EDSA Mall Manager Miguel Emmanuel Gaspi, followed by an inspiring video message from Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, and a show of support from Director Patrick T. Aquino, CESO III, of the Department of Energy’s Energy Utilization Management Bureau. These were followed by a series of talks that connected climate action to practical everyday behavior—from youth participation and resilient communities to simple energy-saving habits that families can practice in daily life. Speakers included representatives from WWF, Quezon City Climate Change, and Meralco.
More than a lecture series, #SaveWATTMatters made space for practical learning on responsible energy use at a time when communities everywhere are facing rising energy demand and growing climate challenges.
With the goal of making climate action feel closer to home, SM also encouraged mall communities to express their own energy-saving ideas through creative activities and to carry the mindful habits learned beyond Earth Hour and Earth Day.
This year’s Earth Day Every Day at SM campaign highlighted SM Supermalls’ ongoing clean-energy initiatives such as reliance on renewables through solar panels installed across 59 properties and EV charging stations available in 85 mall and non-mall properties, for cleaner mobility choices for communities. SM also continues to promote energy-efficient operations, responsible consumption, and sustainable energy use across its nationwide network of most-loved malls—helping reduce environmental impact while serving communities better.
With initiatives like #SaveWATTMatters, SM Cares continues to create spaces where learning, participation, and sustainability come together—empowering communities to make everyday choices that can lead to a cleaner, brighter future.
Participants share their energy-saving commitments during the Earth Day event at SM City North EDSA, reinforcing how everyday actions can contribute to a more sustainable future.
