A man who posed as a condominium caretaker was arrested after allegedly duping a courier into surrendering a ₱292,800 gold necklace in Quezon City.
The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said the suspect, alias “Kenneth,” 36, of Plaridel, Bulacan, was arrested by operatives of Pasong Putik Police Station (PS 16) for estafa.
Investigators reported that the 42-year-old victim was selling a gold necklace online when a buyer identified as “Denice” agreed to purchase the item through cash-on-delivery at Trees Residences in Barangay Pasong Putik Proper.
At around 11:42 a.m. on June 7, the victim sent a courier to deliver the necklace. Upon arrival, the courier contacted the buyer, who claimed her condominium caretaker would receive the item and make the payment on her behalf.
Moments later, the suspect arrived and introduced himself as the caretaker of “Denice.” He persuaded the courier to hand over the necklace, saying it needed to be appraised at a nearby pawnshop.
Police said the suspect pawned the necklace for ₱208,000 and transferred the proceeds to several GCash accounts. The courier was told to wait at the lobby while the suspect supposedly went upstairs to get the payment from the buyer.
Realizing the deception, the courier intercepted the suspect at the condominium’s exit as he attempted to flee and immediately sought assistance from PS 16 officers, who arrested him.
The suspect is now under police custody and faces an estafa complaint.
