PNP standby forces mobilized as gov't steps up response, rehabilitation in Mindanao quake-hit areas
Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), ordered the mobilization of policemen and resources in nearby regions not affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao as part of the efforts to assist the provinces in Mindanao severely hit by the tremor.
But Nartatez said the mobilization will be for standby forces as the national government crafts quick response and rehabilitation efforts especially in a number of areas in Central Mindanao and Davao region.
“We want to make sure that there will be sufficient manpower and resources that will be tapped for a unified response in assisting our affected kababayan,” said Nartatez.
“Our personnel were already on the ground after the earthquake and currently, your PNP is maintaining close coordination with the local government units and other agencies for the search, rescue and assistance efforts,” he added.
Local police forces were immediately mobilized in securing damaged structures and in attending to the injured victims and affected residents after the strong earthquake on Monday morning.
At least 37 people were confirmed dead while more than 200 were reported injured as a result of the quake.
Nartatez said the mobilization of police standby forces was intended to ensure immediate reinforcement for rehabilitation and emergency support operations in affected provinces.
Nartatez tasked police personnel to assist in road-clearing operations to ensure the unhampered delivery of goods and services to affected communities.
Meanwhile, Nartatez has committed to extending assistance to police personnel in Mindanao who were also affected by the earthquake.
Four police stations and two regional headquarters buildings reported varying levels of damage due to the quake. At least 228 uniformed personnel and 13 non-uniformed personnel have been affected and are receiving welfare assistance while structural assessments continue.
Despite widespread disruption, authorities reported that peace and order remain stable with no major security incidents recorded.
