- Sen. Jinggoy Estrada called on the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to remain vigilant and further intensify their presence in the area.
Detained Senator Jinggoy Estrada on Tuesday, June 9 expressed alarm over the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) discovery of a moving structure inside the lagoon of Bajo de Masinloc or Scarborough Shoal in the West Philippine Sea, saying it is a matter of serious concern and warrants immediate attention from the government.
More so, Estrada said if its presence and activities are found to be detrimental to the country’s maritime entitlements and sovereign rights.
AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. earlier described the structure as measured approximately six meters by six meters and was seen carrying six individuals.
“Under international law and the 2016 Arbitral Ruling, the rights of the Philippines to Bajo de Masinloc or Scarborough Shoal are clearly recognized. We must not let these rights be violated or set aside. They are ours,” Estrada said in a statement.
“Continuous and intensive aerial and maritime surveillance is essential to determine the true purpose of the said structure and to implement appropriate measures against whoever is behind it,” he stressed.
Estrada further noted it is simply astonishing how the said structure was able to enter and be positioned without being immediately identified.
“Therefore, I call on the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine Coast Guard to remain vigilant and further intensify their presence in the area. We must ensure that no activities are carried out that may harm our legitimate rights and interests in Bajo de Masinloc,” he said.
“Any attempt to encroach upon or establish a permanent or semi-permanent presence within our territorial waters and maritime zones must be addressed promptly and decisively,” Estrada said.
The senator urged the public to remain vigilant and steadfast in protecting the country’s sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea while continuing to pursue peaceful, lawful, and rules-based measures consistent with international law.
“The defense of our national sovereignty and maritime interests requires constant vigilance, unity, and an unwavering commitment to uphold what rightfully belongs to the Filipino people,” he said.
