The government has mobilized helicopters, ships, food supplies, and emergency funds to assist more than 145,000 people affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Southern Mindanao on Monday, June 8.
According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the earthquake affected 145,693 individuals or 32,926 families in 163 barangays across Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao Region, and Soccsksargen as of Tuesday, June 9.
Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian said relief operations have focused on some of the hardest-hit areas in Sarangani province, including Glan, Maasim, and Malapatan, as well as the municipalities of Malita, Don Marcelino, Jose Abad Santos, and Balut Island in Davao Occidental.
He noted that landslides triggered by the quake have blocked roads in several affected areas.
“The Air Force is airlifting additional relief goods using Black Hawk helicopters so they can reach affected communities immediately. We are also coordinating with the Philippine Coast Guard and the Philippine Navy to transport additional family food packs by sea,” Gatchalian said.
To address the immediate needs of injured residents, DSWD distributed financial assistance worth ₱10,000 each to 126 patients at the Sarangani Provincial Hospital and 295 patients at the Dr. Jorge P. Royeca Hospital.
The agency also provided ready-to-eat food packs to mothers staying in the obstetrics wards of both hospitals and set up outdoor tents at the Dr. Jorge P. Royeca Hospital to accommodate evacuated patients.
Modular and family tents were also installed at an evacuation center in Jose Abad Santos for displaced residents.
The DSWD said it had more than 1.1 million family food packs prepositioned across Mindanao before the earthquake, allowing relief operations to begin immediately after the disaster.
As of Tuesday, the agency reported providing at least ₱4.23 million worth of humanitarian assistance to affected families and individuals.
It added that ₱839.89 million remains available under its Quick Response Fund, along with food and non-food items worth ₱4.46 billion ready for deployment.
Gatchalian, together with Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa and Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon, visited affected areas on Tuesday to assess the situation and oversee ongoing response efforts.
