The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) mobilized assistance for communities affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off Maasim, Sarangani on Monday, June 8.
At least 19 people were reportedly killed in Soccsksargen (Region 12) and Davao (Region 11) while 12 others were missing due to the powerful tremor.
In response to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s call for the immediate mobilization of assistance, the PCSO and its Authorized Agent Corporations (AACs) extended support to affected families and residents by delivering relief aid consisting of ready-to-eat meals and other food supplies.
AACs in Mindanao were among the first groups on the ground to coordinate relief efforts with local partners and assist communities hit by the earthquake, a statement from the PCSO said.
“In times of disaster, the true spirit of compassion shines through even more. Our KawanggaWarriors are showing up when our fellow countrymen need us the most,” PCSO General Manager Melquiades Robles said.
The strong tremor struck at 7:37 a.m. off the coast of Sarangani and was felt across several parts of Mindanao, including General Santos City and nearby areas where damage was reported.
“Through the collective efforts of PCSO and our Authorized Agent Corporations, we will continue to extend help, hope, and immediate support to families affected by this earthquake,” Robles said.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported high earthquake intensities in parts of Sarangani and South Cotabato and warned residents to expect aftershocks and possible additional damage.
Robles said the agency would continue working with its network of partners to ensure assistance reaches affected communities as relief operations continue.
“Ang PCSO ay laging handang umalalay sa ating mga kababayan, lalo na sa panahon ng matinding pangangailangan. We thank our AAC partners in Mindanao for acting with urgency, compassion, and a shared commitment to public service,” he said.
