CANDON CITY – Alyssa Solomon was just as good as advertised when she played her first game and topscored in Alas Pilipinas’ 22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-25, 11-15 loss to Australia in the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup here at the Candon City Arena Sunday, June 7.
Despite the tough loss, the attention turned to Solomon as she was recognized by Australia head coach Borgeaud Russell for her talent.
“I think she played really well, the opposite hitter, number six [Alyssa Solomon] was excellent,” said Borgeaud. “She really made it very difficult [for us].”
The 24-year-old Solomon earned the nod of the veteran Australian mentor after the Filipina hitter came out blasting in the second set where she spearheaded the Nationals’ epic comeback to level the match at 1-1.
The former National University star finished with 23 points, while team skipper Alyssa Valdez and Niña Ytang provided support which all went down the drain.
Russell applauded the fight from the Filipinas who delighted the crowd with their determination.
“I know there are some players that were missing as well… but the players [here] came out [and] gave their best. [They] played exceptionally well in periods,” Russell continued.
“It's been a long time I think since we beat the Philippines, so yes, I expected it to be very tight. We knew it would be a difficult game,” he added.
World No. 77 Australia eyes its second straight win against No. 39 Chinese Taipei this Monday, June 8, while the No. 48 Philippines tries to vent its ire on No. 73 Kyrgyzstan. Both games are set at the same venue.
