First tsunami waves arrive after Sarangani quake; tsunami warning remains in effect

Tsunami waves of varying heights, including a maximum recorded height of 1.4 meters, were detected by sea-level monitoring stations following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Sarangani on Monday morning, June 8, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
According to Phivolcs, tsunami activity remains ongoing, with sea-level monitoring stations in several parts of Mindanao continuing to record tsunami waves hours after the earthquake.
Based on data from Phivolcs sea-level monitoring stations as of 11 a.m., the first tsunami waves arrived at 7:42 a.m. in Maasim, Sarangani; 7:44 a.m. in Kiamba, Sarangani; 7:59 a.m. in Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat; 8:19 a.m. in Mati City, Davao Oriental; 8:32 a.m. in Zamboanga City; and 8:45 a.m. in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur.
The agency reiterated that tsunami activity may continue for several hours after the arrival of the initial waves and urged residents in affected coastal communities to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of local authorities.
Phivolcs said it continues to monitor sea-level conditions and assess potential impacts along coastlines covered by the tsunami warning.
