ILOILO CITY – Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon urged people to give San Miguel Corp. (SMC) time to address concerns over the P7.78-billion proposed bridge project for Boracay Island.
“Let us allow them (SMC) to dialogue and continue talking,” said Dizon here on Friday, June 5.
A recent dialogue between four Aklan officials and SMC President and Chief Executive Officer Ramon Ang became contentious with different public announcements over the project linking Boracay Island to mainland Malay town in Aklan province.
Local officials, including Gov. Jose Enrique “Joen” Miraflores, said that Ang has decided to cancel the project during a May 13 meeting. But Ang denied saying that the project has been cancelled and reiterated SMC is still open for a dialogue with Aklan stakeholders.
“I do not want to speak too much about that until the dialogue continues,” said Dizon in response to a question posed by Manila Bulletin that no public consultation has been made.
There is massive opposition by locals to the 2.54-kilometer project awarded by the DPWH to San Miguel Holdings Corp. (SMHC), the infrastructure arm of SMC.
No public consultation has been conducted over the project under the DPWH Public-Private Partnership (PPP) program and no single endorsement has been made in Malay and Aklan.
“Since it’s a PPP project, San Miguel has to make sure the (bridge) project is acceptable to the community,” Dizon said. “San Miguel has to make sure the needs of the locals are met,” added Dizon.
The public and private sectors in Aklan have opposed the project since 2019. Opposition is largely anchored on the project’s perceived negative impact to the environment by causing overdevelopment and affecting the livelihood of the boat industry to local businesses.
