Weljon Mindoro preserved his unbeaten record but saw his knockout streak come to an end after earning a unanimous decision victory over rugged Mexican Elias Espadas in their 10-round super middleweight clash at the University of Texas on Saturday, June 6 (Manila time).
Known for his knockout power, Mindoro found Espadas difficult to put away despite scoring a knockdown in the fourth round. The Mexican veteran weathered the storm and remained competitive until the final bell.
Espadas mounted a strong challenge in the latter rounds, even rocking Mindoro with several heavy shots and leaving the Filipino with a swollen right eye. However, it was not enough to sway the judges, who scored the bout 96-93, 98-91, and 97-92 in favor of Mindoro.
The victory marked the first time Mindoro went the distance as a professional after recording knockouts in each of his first 16 wins. The Filipino improved to 17-0-1, while Espadas slipped to 28-9-1.
Mindoro controlled the early stages of the contest, setting the pace through the opening three rounds. Espadas responded in the fourth, trapping the Filipino in a corner and unloading a series of solid punches.
The 26-year-old Mindoro quickly regained momentum, however, landing a thunderous overhand right that sent Espadas to the canvas for the bout's lone knockdown.
Sensing an opportunity for a stoppage, Mindoro pressed the attack but ran out of time in the round. Espadas recovered well and came forward aggressively in the second half of the fight, yet Mindoro remained composed and did enough to secure the unanimous decision victory.
