CANDON CITY – Reigning champion Vietnam kicked off its title defense in a rousing fashion after hacking out a 25-3, 25-15, 25-14 win over Lebanon for its first win in the 2026 AVC Women's Volleyball Cup at the Candon City Arena Saturday, June 6 here.
The Vietnamese immediately imposed their will against the Lebanese particularly in the opening set, where they struck down their opposition offensively before completing a dominant sweep in their title-retention bid.
Nhu Anh Le and Thi Uyen Nguyen took charge in the four-peat seeking Vietnamese’s offense after posting 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Thi Bich Thuy Tran chipped in nine points for their first win in Pool B.
Shantalle Marie Demirjian posted nine points to topscore the Lebanese side in a losing cause.
In the other game, last year’s fourth-place finisher Kazakhstan bucked a slow start and dismantled Hong Kong, 20-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-13.
Tatyana Yatskiv spearheaded the Kazakh assault after posting 25 points on 22 attacks, one block, and two aces, while Yuliya Fomenko and Bota Uatayeva contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively.
On the other hand, Lam Shum became the lone double-digit scorer for Hong Kong with 13 points. Nga Yee Leung and Wing Ni Yim contributed nine points apiece.
Meanwhile, the Alyssa Valdez-skippered Alas Pilipinas begins its campaign before the Ilocano fans against a gritty Uzbekistan side as of presstime.
