DENR rescues endangered wildlife in Sarangani

DAVAO CITY – Authorities recovered 53 native and exotic wildlife species in a joint law enforcement operation Barangay Maribulan, Alabel, Sarangani province on Thursday, June 4.
A report from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Region 12, personnel of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Glan, Sarangani, and elements of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said 14 eclectus parrots, 18 black-capped lories, 11 Victoria/Western crowned pigeons, three wallabies with one dead, three rufous hornbill, two sulphur-crested cockatoos, one black lory, and a white-bellied sea eagle were found in the operation.
The DENR said the white-bellied sea eagle is a native species classified as “vulnerable” under DENR Administrative Order No. 2019-09. Rufous hornbills are endemic to the Philippines.
The DENR-12 said that the operation stemmed from intelligence reports regarding the illegal transport and trade of wildlife in the area.
The DENR-12 added that the wildlife species were discovered in a temporary holding facility inside a residential compound, confined in wooden transport crates and wire cages.
They believe that the wildlife species were being prepared for distribution.
Given the volume and variety of species, the DENR said that those behind this illegal activity are possibly involved in commercial trading of wildlife species.
According to DENR-12, several individuals believed to be involved in the operation fled the area upon the arrival of the enforcement team.
The wildlife was turned over to the CIDG-Sarangani Provincial Office for safekeeping as evidence while the white-bellied sea eagle was endorsed to the Sarangani Environmental Conservation and Protection Center (ECPC) for veterinary assessment and appropriate care.
The DENR-12 said that the remaining two wallabies did not survive, leaving 51 live wildlife specimens under government custody and care.
The agency reminded the public that possession of wildlife without proper permits is a violation of Republic Act No. 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.
