CICC warns netizens as disinformation drive escalates amid Senate leadership row

Authorities warned netizens of deliberate attempts to mislead them on the issues surrounding the change of leadership in the Senate and related political issues, saying disinformation campaigns will only contribute to confusion amid the heightened political conflicts.
Undersecretary Aboy Paraiso, head of the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC), said they have been monitoring discussions and activities across digital platforms indicating that certain groups may be organizing rallies and other public assemblies in the wake of recent leadership changes in the Senate.
“We encourage Filipinos to be vigilant when consuming and sharing information related to political and religious activities, particularly on social media and messaging platforms,” said Paraiso.
“The CICC also reminds the public to verify information that they see on social media platforms through credible and official sources before participating in any event,” he added.
Paraiso explained that the spread of misinformation, disinformation and unverified content that could mislead the public, intensify tensions, or contribute to the confusion amid the political tension.
Hundreds of people went to the Senate during the investigation into the flood control, a hearing that was slammed by the new majority headed by Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has already deployed additional policemen at the Senate in anticipation of more protesters in the coming days.
There were also reports circulating about a plan to storm Malacañang on June 12, a claim that was shut down by the PNP.
Paraiso said netizens should practice responsible online behavior and help foster a safe and constructive cyberspace while contributing to peace, stability, and national unity during this period of political transition.
“Cyberspace is not only a platform for expressing opinions but also a shared space
where every Filipino has a responsibility to ensure that the information you consume and share is accurate and constructive,” said Paraiso.
“We appeal to Filipino netizens to be discerning and responsible online. Let us not add fuel to confusion, division, or conflict by spreading unverified information or inflammatory content. Instead, let us promote respectful dialogue based on facts and digital responsibility,” he added.
