The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) convened government agencies and uniformed services at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Operations Center in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City on Friday, June 5, as the national government tightened preparedness measures for the combined effects of tropical depression Ester and the southwest monsoon (habagat).
The meeting was led by OCD Assistant Secretary Cesar M. Idio and Operations Service Director Moises M. Nayve Jr., and attended by representatives from the Department of Agriculture (DA), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Health (DOH), and Department of Energy (DOE).
Meanwhile, OCD Administrator Undersecretary Harold Cabreros held a separate briefing with local government units to ensure their preparedness.
The OCD said evacuation centers have been prepared and emergency teams were placed on standby in anticipation of possible floodings, landslides, and other risks.
“Evacuation centers are ready in case residents need to be evacuated. Rapid deployment teams are also on alert, and food and non-food items have been prepositioned for immediate response in areas that may be affected,” the agency stated.
PAGASA earlier issued rainfall warnings across several regions and a heightened risk of flooding and landslides in low-lying and mountainous areas.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 was raised over Batanes, signaling the northernmost province remains under wind threat.
