The Manila City government on Thursday, June 4, commemorated the 455th anniversary of the Kagitingan ng Bangkusay in Moriones, Tondo, marking the official kickoff of the monthlong celebration of Araw ng Maynila.
The annual observance pays tribute to the warriors from Hagonoy, Bulacan, and Macabebe, Pampanga, who fought against Spanish forces during the historic Battle of Bangkusay -- one of the earliest recorded acts of resistance against foreign rule in the country.
Manila Vice Mayor Chi Atienza led the wreath-laying ceremony, joined by Holy Angel University Center for Kapampangan Studies Director Myra Lopez; Macabebe, Pampanga Councilor Joel Simpauco; Hagonoy, Bulacan Mayor Ma. Rosario Alvarado-Mendoza; Alvin Arce of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA); and Manila First District Councilor Jesus “Taga” Fajardo Jr.
In her speech, Vice Mayor Atienza emphasized the importance of unity in overcoming challenges, drawing inspiration from the courage shown by the Bangkusay warriors more than four centuries ago.
“Kung ikaw ay isang batang Manileño, alam ninyo ang palaging sinasabi ng ating alkalde na kahit ano pa man ang problema ang kaharapin natin basta tayo sama-sama, tulong-tulong. We will all be able to make Manila great again (If you are a young Manileño, you know what our mayor always says: no matter what problem we face, as long as we are united and helping each other, we will all be able to make Manila great again),” Atienza said.
She added that the commemoration serves as a reminder that collective action and cooperation remain vital in addressing present-day challenges, just as unity strengthened Filipinos in their fight against foreign domination.
The observance also underscored Manila’s commitment to preserving and promoting the country’s rich historical heritage.
“Patuloy na ginugunita ng Lungsod ng Maynila ang mahahalagang yugto ng kasaysayan bilang pagpapahalaga sa mga bayaning nagbigay-daan sa kalayaan at pagkakakilanlan ng sambayanang Pilipino (The City of Manila continues to commemorate important historical events in appreciation of the heroes who paved the way for the freedom and identity of the Filipino people).”
