A story of grief, resilience, and protecting what matters most

No family is ever truly prepared for loss. One moment, life feels steady and familiar, and in a snap, everything changes in ways no one could have imagined.
For Mary Ann Bensal, that moment came on Nov. 21, 2019. Her husband died in a vehicular accident along Marcos Highway, leaving behind a grieving family suddenly forced to navigate life without him. But even before that heartbreaking day, Mary Ann had already been carrying another quiet battle of her own. In September 2015, she was diagnosed with Sick Sinus Syndrome, a heart condition that eventually required her to undergo a pacemaker insertion in November that same year.
Suddenly, Mary Ann found herself facing overwhelming emotional, physical, and financial uncertainty. She was grieving the loss of her husband while trying to recover from her own health condition and continue caring for her family. The future that once felt certain became fragile overnight.
“No amount of preparation can ever take away the pain,” she shared.
Grief stayed with her long after the accident. There was no shortcut through the heartbreak, no easy way to process the sudden absence of someone deeply loved. Yet amid the pain, one thing helped her slowly regain stability during one of the most difficult seasons of her life. “Having financial security helped me stand up again and continue providing for my family,” she said.
For Mary Ann, insurance became more than a policy or financial product during that time. It became something deeply human. It gave her space to grieve without being completely consumed by fear over hospital bills, daily expenses, and the responsibility of continuing to provide for her loved ones. It allowed her to focus on healing and rebuilding instead of carrying every burden alone. That experience would eventually change the direction of her life.
Long before becoming one of Pru Life UK’s leaders in Baguio, Mary Ann was already familiar with serving communities. She previously worked in the cooperative sector where she became a member, later serving as one of its board directors while also handling collections as a cooperative collector.
Her introduction to Pru Life UK came in 2005 when she purchased a policy for her youngest child after attending a seminar conducted for their cooperative members. What started as a simple decision to protect her family gradually opened a new path for her.
Inspired by what she learned, she eventually became a Pru Life UK agent herself. “Now, I am grateful because I am able to guide families and help them secure their future,” she shared.
Over time, she also grew into a Unit Manager, carrying with her not only professional knowledge, but a deeply personal understanding of why protection matters.
Her journey shaped the way she now leads people.
Today, Mary Ann approaches leadership with empathy, compassion, and sincerity rooted in lived experience. She understands that conversations about insurance are rarely just about finances. Behind every policy is a family hoping to stay protected through life’s uncertainties. Behind every plan is a parent wanting security for their children, a loved one hoping to preserve dignity during illness, or a household trying to prepare for the unexpected. “It is dignity during crises. It is protecting the people you love when you are no longer able to do it.” as she puts it.
Having experienced loss firsthand, she now hopes to help more Filipinos understand the value of protection long before a crisis arrives.
“This is about being present in someone’s life when they need it most,” she said. “Insurance for me is love in action. It’s how you protect the people you care about even when life becomes uncertain.”
Years after one of the most painful chapters of her life, Mary Ann continues to rebuild with purpose. The grief remains part of her story, but so does resilience. So does hope.
Her story reflects the heart of Pru Life UK’s 30 Stories of PRUtection campaign, which highlights real experiences showing how protection becomes meaningful when built on trust, understanding, and care.
For three decades, Pru Life UK has continued helping Filipino families navigate uncertainty with greater confidence and security. And through stories like Mary Ann’s, protection becomes more than financial support. It becomes a way for families to hold on to dignity, even during life’s most difficult moments.
