The first time I encountered the name Volter John was in the context of a message from Ryan Cayabyab. I had watched Ryan’s latest "MaestroClass" concert series in mid-May and asked our National Artist for help in arranging an interview with one of his guest artists that evening, Gigi de Lana. Ryan replied that Volter John (VJ) manages Gigi and that I would probably remember him as one of the members of the Ryan Cayabyab Singers. That was my first inkling of the many hats Mr. Volter is capable of wearing.
As it turned out, Volter was not only helpful but also exceptionally responsible in looking after Gigi’s interests. He played a key role in making it possible for us to conduct an "MB Sit Down" episode with his artist, something her fans can look forward to seeing soon on YouTube and Spotify. Throughout the interview, Gigi was game, candid, and remarkably forthcoming.
A little research on my part revealed that Volter is also a recording artist in his own right, with songs such as "Ganito Lang" and "Hindi Para Sa Akin" available on Spotify. When I prodded him further, he shared that a new song, "Kalmado," is set for release later this June, another track that introduces listeners to his self-described "Ppop&B" genre.
It's an attempt to redefine what OPM can sound like. As VJ describes it, “It’s a sound that blends the accessibility of Pinoy Pop, the emotional weight of the blues, and the smooth soulfulness of R&B.”
The music is rooted in peace, emotional sincerity, and quiet yet assured expression. There is something immediate and pleasing about it, but also a calmness reminiscent of late-night conversations and intimate moments. It is modern, heartfelt, Taglish-friendly, and still distinctly Filipino.
"Kalmado" embodies all of these qualities and more. It presents love as refuge and safety, a peaceful haven rather than a dramatic escape from reality. Through the song, Volter introduces listeners to a new strand of original Filipino music: Ppop&B—pop for the heart, blues for the soul, R&B for the vibe, and 100-proof Pilipino.
Composer, arranger, ensemble singer, solo artist, manager—there are many hats that Volter John Caber is ready to wear. What stands out, however, is the dedication and authenticity he brings to each of these endeavors.
Do check out "Kalmado" when it drops. In the meantime, I found myself particularly drawn to "Ganito Lang."
