Senate must rise above politics

The Senate has long been regarded as one of the nation's most important democratic institutions. It is a chamber entrusted with sober judgment, independent thinking, and a steadfast commitment to the public good. Its members carry the responsibility of crafting laws, conducting oversight, and safeguarding the interests of the Filipino people. Yet today, many Filipinos are watching with growing concern as political rivalries and partisan maneuvering threaten to overshadow these fundamental duties.
At a time when the country faces pressing economic, social, and governance challenges, the nation needs a Senate focused on solutions rather than divisions. Filipinos expect their elected leaders to debate vigorously when necessary, but they also expect them to work together when the national interest demands it. The current atmosphere of political intramurals risks turning the Senate into a battleground for competing camps rather than a forum for principled legislation and governance.
Members of both the majority and the minority must reflect deeply to recognize what is at stake. Political differences are natural in a democracy and can even strengthen public institutions when expressed responsibly. However, when political interests and calculations become more important than the urgent needs of the people, the institution itself begins to suffer. The Senate's credibility rests not merely on constitutional authority but on public trust. That trust is difficult to earn and easy to lose.
Every senator, regardless of political affiliation, took an oath to serve the Republic. That oath was not made to political parties, factions, personalities, or transient alliances. It was made to the Constitution and to the Filipino people. Therefore, the Senate’s mandate is larger than any political interest and more enduring than any individual ambition. Its members must, therefore, rise above personal and partisan considerations and demonstrate the statesmanship that their office mandates.
The country cannot afford prolonged paralysis. Legislative priorities remain unfinished. Critical national issues demand attention. Citizens are looking to their leaders for clarity, stability, and action. What they should not see is a self-destructing institution consumed by internal conflict while urgent public concerns wait in the background.
The Senate still has an opportunity to reclaim and strengthen its moral ascendancy. But doing so will require humility, discipline, and a renewed commitment to public service. Senators from both sides must engage one another in good faith, focus on substance rather than spectacle, and place the welfare of the nation above political advantage. History tends to remember leaders not for the battles they fought against one another, but for the challenges they confronted together on behalf of their people.
If senators can no longer rise above political intramurals, if they can no longer discharge their duties with the seriousness that the moment demands, then they must consider the honorable alternative. Public office is a privilege bestowed by the people, not a possession to be clung to at all costs. If they are unable to serve the national interest, they should step aside and allow the electorate to choose new representatives through a special election.
The stakes are too high for anything less.
The Philippines deserves a Senate that works, a Senate that leads, and a Senate that places country above politics. Filipinos deserve nothing less. History is watching. The Filipino people are watching. Now, the question is whether the Senate will rise to meet this moment, or become a cautionary tale of an institution that placed political conflict above national duty.
The hour for excuses has passed. The hour for statesmanship has arrived.
