Premium Japanese coffee experience lands in Makati
Key Coffee opens at Glorietta with Ginza-inspired café and Wagyu-forward menu

There is a familiar pattern in Japanese concepts entering new markets: they tend to elevate everyday experiences into something quietly luxurious. Whether in tourism, fashion, beauty, or food, Japan has long mastered the art of refinement. That same sensibility now finds a new home in Manila through Key Coffee.
On May 28, the Japanese coffee brand officially opened its newest branch at Glorietta Mall in Makati City. Following its locations in Taguig and Quezon City, each designed with its own identity, this latest café draws inspiration from Ginza, Tokyo’s upscale district known for its luxury shopping arcades, refined dining, and architectural elegance.
Manila Bulletin Lifestyle was among the first to experience the space, now called Key Coffee Ginza Salon, where the brand leans into a more indulgent interpretation of café dining, anchored by its premium Wagyu offerings.

At the center of the menu is a lineup of thoughtfully composed bento sets. The Wagyu Yakiniku Bento features marinated Wagyu striploin glazed with onion yakiniku sauce, served with steak rice, assorted okazu (including standout mushrooms and potato salad), and miso soup. For those who prefer a more delicate preparation, the Wagyu Tataki Bento offers lightly seared A4 Wagyu striploin with soy garlic sauce, alongside the same curated sides. Meanwhile, the more adventurous palate may opt for the Wagyu Tartare Bento, featuring A5 Wagyu picanha prepared as a rich, raw marinated tartare served with sushi rice and accompaniments.
Meat lovers will find no shortage of indulgent choices here.
In an interview with Manila Bulletin Lifestyle, Marvin Chua, vice president of operations at Boosterfoods Inc., said the menu was designed with intentionality and a sense of place.

“It pays homage to Ginza City. We see Makati City as the Ginza of the Philippines because of the business district and the upscale lifestyle here,” he said. “We reflected that in the food that we offer. We have a lot of exclusives that are only available here, including premium beef bentos and premium coffee bentos.”
Beyond its Wagyu selections, another standout concept is the café’s signature Coffee Bento Flight, which reimagines coffee tasting as a curated experience. It features three distinct drinks: Roasted Banana Milk Brew, Good Morning Kape (hot brewed coffee), and Raspberry Cold Brew Soda, each paired with specially selected desserts designed to complement their flavor profiles.
Founded in Japan in 1920, Key Coffee has built its reputation on quality beans and craftsmanship. The Glorietta branch continues this legacy through a coffee program that bridges heritage and locality. It highlights the brand’s celebrated Toarco Toraja beans, sourced from Key Coffee’s own farm in the highlands of Sulawesi. Once nearly lost after World War II, the variety was revived in 1978 and remains one of the brand’s most prized offerings.

Alongside this heritage roast, the café introduces something distinctly local: a dark roast made from Philippine-sourced beans, roasted in-house and developed to reflect how Japanese coffee craftsmanship can be expressed through Filipino ingredients. Together, these brews reflect a philosophy that begins with the cup and works backward, shaping every detail of the experience.
For something more playful yet still refined, the Coffee Bento Flight brings both worlds together in a single tasting—three coffees paired with omakase-style pastries designed to highlight, contrast, and elevate each sip.

For lighter bites, the menu offers comforting Japanese-inspired snacks. The Konbini Tamago features steamed egg layered with house-made Japanese mayonnaise, topped with tobiko and spring onions, served with a soft pretzel bun. The Crab Ikura Udon delivers handmade noodles in a rich crab fat sauce, topped with crab meat, ikura, tempura bits, and fresh spring onions.
Even non-coffee drinkers are thoughtfully considered. Refreshing alternatives include the Panda Cream Soda and Grapefruit Tarragon Fizz, both crafted to match the café’s playful yet polished sensibility.
At Key Coffee Ginza Salon, the experience goes beyond coffee or dining. It is a carefully constructed interpretation of Japanese café culture, reframed through a Makati lens—refined, intentional, and quietly indulgent.
