Following its unsuccessful bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Thursday, June 4, thanked the international community for supporting the Philippines' candidacy and reiterated the country's commitment to advancing peace, dialogue, and international cooperation after Kyrgyzstan secured the Asia-Pacific seat for 2027–2028.
“The Philippines remains committed to working with all nations in pursuing peace, stability, sustainable development, and a rules-based international order,” DFA Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro said in a statement.
The Philippines also congratulated Kyrgyzstan on its successful election to a non-permanent seat on the UNSC while reaffirming its commitment to peace, international law, and multilateral cooperation despite falling short in its own bid.
In the same statement, Lazaro said the Philippines respects the decision of the United Nations member states and extended its congratulations to the Kyrgyz Republic following the election.
“The Philippines respects the decision of the member states of the United Nations and extends its congratulations to the Kyrgyz Republic following today’s election for the non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council,” Lazaro said.
The Philippines also expressed gratitude to the international community for its support during its campaign for a seat on the powerful UN body.
“We thank the international community for the support and goodwill extended to the Philippines throughout our candidacy,” Lazaro said.
According to the DFA, the country's campaign was anchored on its longstanding commitment to peace, dialogue, international law, and cooperation among nations.
“Our campaign was anchored on our longstanding commitment to peace, dialogue, international law, and cooperation among nations,” Lazaro said.
“These remain principles that the Philippines will continue to uphold and advance in the global community,” she added.
The Philippines failed to secure the Asia-Pacific seat for the 2027–2028 term after four rounds of voting at the United Nations General Assembly on June 4.
Kyrgyzstan secured victory in the fourth round after obtaining 142 votes, surpassing the required two-thirds majority of 128 votes from the 191-member states that participated in the election. The Philippines received 49 votes in the final round.
In the earlier rounds, Kyrgyzstan steadily expanded its lead. It garnered 105 votes against the Philippines’ 85 in the first round, 110 against 81 in the second round, and 123 against 68 in the third round.
The Philippines had sought its fifth term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, having previously served in 1957, 1963, 1980–1981, and 2004–2005.
The UN Security Council is the principal United Nations body tasked with maintaining international peace and security.
It is composed of 15 members, including five permanent members with veto power — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States — and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.
