ILOILO CITY – Philippine Army commanding general Lt. Gen. Antonio G. Nafarrete urged graduating students of West Visayas State University (WVSU) to have an open dialogue over his selection as commencement speaker.
“WVSU teaches us critical thinking and open dialogue, part of that education is engaging in perspectives far different from our own by asking questions respectfully and judging ideas by the values they share,” said Nafarrete during the WVSU recognition program on Wednesday, June 3.
Some graduating students who received awards were wearing black ribbons. University-based student organizations have opposed the selection of Nafarrete as speaker over his alleged role in human rights abuses as Army chief.
Nafarrete reminded graduating students they were given scholarships by the government. “Never lose direction. Never fall victim to those who have dark intentions and aim to lead you astray through propaganda and deception with sweet words and masterful disguise,” Nafarrete said.
The WVSU administration reiterated its stand and defended inviting Nafarrete, an Ilonggo and alumnus of the university.
WVSU President Joselito Villaruz urged respect between university administrators and students. “We can be principled and respectful at the same time. We can be critical and still be gracious. We can disagree and still honor the purpose of this day – in recognizing student achievements,” Villaruz said.
