President Marcos vowed to further strengthen the Bawat Barangay Makikinabang program, stressing the importance of education in improving the future of Filipino youth.
Speaking during a meet-and-greet with Batang Maynila presidential scholars at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila, Marcos said the government continues to invest in programs aimed at helping students finish their studies and improve their future opportunities.
“Napakahalaga para sa administrasyong ito ang magandang edukasyon para sa ating mga kabataan (Quality education for our youth is very important to this administration),” he said Wednesday, June 3.
“Dahil po, alam naman po natin na pagka nakapagtapos, may hawak na diploma, may hawak na certificate, ang isang tao ay mas maganda ang kanyang kinabukasan. Mas maraming magagawa, mas madaling makahanap ng trabaho (Because we know that once a person graduates and holds a diploma or certificate, they will have a better future. They can do more, and it becomes easier for them to find work),” he added.
According to Marcos, the scholarship and barangay assistance initiative is already being implemented in around 15,000 barangays and is expected to cover approximately 42,000 barangays nationwide eventually.
The President said the nationwide rollout could produce more than 200,000 presidential scholars.
Dropout concerns
Marcos cited data from the Education Commission (EDCOM) showing that nearly 29 percent of college students dropped out last year.
“Ito po yung mga malalapit na magtapos. Kaya sa ngayon, sa halos 15,000 na po na barangay ang nabigyan ng suporta nitong programang ito (These are students who are already close to graduating. That is why nearly 15,000 barangays have now received support through this program),” he said.
“Dito naman sa Maynila, mahigit 4,000 ang magiging presidential scholar dito. At ito ay malaking bagay upang makatulong sa inyong edukasyon (Here in Manila alone, more than 4,000 will become presidential scholars. This will greatly help support your education),” he added.
Two-part assistance program
The Bawat Barangay Makikinabang program consists of two major components — the Bagong Pilipinas Barangay Scholars Program and assistance for barangay-identified development priorities.
Under the scholarship component, the government provides financial assistance to deserving incoming fourth-year college students, particularly those considered vulnerable or at risk of dropping out.
Priority is given to students from families where no member has yet completed tertiary education.
The second component allows barangays to identify and implement development interventions based on their immediate community needs.
The program is targeted for incoming fourth-year college students for the school year 2026-2027.
