- Sen. Loren Legarda said Republic Act No. 12320 or the Philippine Veterans' Month Act institutionalizes a month-long national observance dedicated to honoring the heroism, sacrifices, and enduring contributions of Filipino veterans in safeguarding the nation's freedom, sovereignty, and democratic ideals.
Senator Loren Legarda hailed the enactment into law of the measure declaring April of every year as Philippine Veterans’ Month.
Legarda, principal author and principal sponsor of Republic Act No. 12320 or the Philippine Veterans’ Month Act, which was signed into law by the President last May 26, welcomed its enactment saying the measure institutionalizes a month-long national observance dedicated to honoring the heroism, sacrifices, and enduring contributions of Filipino veterans in safeguarding the nation’s freedom, sovereignty, and democratic ideals.
“Ang batas na ito ay alay ng bayan sa ating mga beterano. Ang kanilang tapang at sakripisyo ang nagbigay sa atin ng kalayaan, at tungkulin nating panatilihing buhay ang kanilang alaala (This law is a gift from the nation to our veterans. Their courage and sacrifice gave us freedom, and it is our duty to keep their memory alive),”Legarda said.
Under Republic Act No. 12320, government agencies, local government units (LGUs), state universities and colleges (SUCs), and other stakeholders are mandated to organize commemorative and service-oriented activities throughout April.
These include educational programs, volunteer and youth engagement initiatives, recognition and awards, improved delivery of veterans’ benefits and services, health and wellness activities for veterans and their families, and public awareness campaigns to educate the youth on the role of veterans in nation-building.
The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO), in coordination with the Department of National Defense (DND) and other partner agencies, is designated as one of the lead institutions responsible for implementing and promoting programs in support of Philippine Veterans’ Month.
“Ibinigay nila ang lahat para sa bayan. Ang pagsasabatas ng Philippine Veterans’ Month Act, ay bahagi lamang ng ating pagkilala sa kanilang sakripisyo. Patuloy silang magiging inspirasyon sa kasalukuyan at sa mga kabataan na patuloy na magmamahal at maglilingkod sa ating bansa (They gave their all for the country. The enactment of the Philippine Veterans’ Month Act is just part of our recognition of their sacrifice. They will continue to be an inspiration to the present and to the youth who will continue to love and serve our country),” Legarda said, underscoring the importance of honoring veterans.
Legarda said the government, through this law, aims to strengthen public appreciation of veterans’ sacrifices and foster patriotism, civic consciousness, and historical awareness among Filipinos.
