The City of Manila officially launched its month-long Buwan ng Maynila celebration on Monday night, June 1, with a nostalgic return to one of the country’s most beloved television families, as Home Along Da Riles: Da Reunion held its first-ever public screening at the historic Metropolitan Theater.

More than just a movie premiere, the event served as a tribute to the late King of Comedy Dolphy, a proud son of Tondo, and a special treat for hundreds of Manila City Hall employees who were among the first audience members to watch the highly anticipated reunion film ahead of its nationwide release on June 17.

Employees from various departments of the Manila local government filled the Metropolitan Theater alongside members of the media and the film’s complete cast, turning the screening into a celebration of both Filipino cinema and Manila’s cultural heritage.

The choice of Manila as the venue carried special significance. The fictional world of Home Along Da Riles likewise reflected the struggles, resilience, and close family ties often associated with communities in Manila.

Long before he became a household name, Dolphy spent his early years in Tondo, where he developed the wit, humor, and life experiences that would later define his legendary career.

By hosting the film’s first public screening at the Metropolitan Theater, one of the city’s most iconic cultural landmarks, Manila paid homage to the comedy legend whose roots trace back to the capital.

Department of Tourism, Culture and Arts of Manila (DTCAM) Director Cristina Bagatsing described the screening as a symbolic homecoming for Dolphy and the franchise that became part of the lives of generations of Filipinos.

“We bring Dolphy back to Manila,” Bagatsing said during the event.

The screening also highlighted the city government’s efforts to include arts, culture, and entertainment in this year’s Buwan ng Maynila celebration, which commemorates Manila’s rich history and its role as the country’s capital.

For many City Hall employees, the event offered a rare opportunity to unwind and enjoy a night of laughter as recognition for their service to the city.

The film reunites members of the iconic Cosme family decades after Home Along Da Riles became a staple of Philippine television. Directed by Boy 2 Quizon, who reprises his role as Estong Cosme, the movie brings back familiar faces while introducing a new generation to the franchise’s trademark mix of comedy, family drama, and heart.
