A golden visa program is a growing type of travel that has become enticing for business travelers recently. Think of it as an alternative way to reside in your dream country through investments. Some have likened it to depositing funds in your country of choice, rather than in a bank. In return, you get to live there for a set amount of time or even gain citizenship. What most might be pondering is whether it’s worth it.
What countries follow the golden visa program?
Among the top countries observing the golden visa program is the US. For the US, President Donald Trump introduced the Trump Gold Card program, where those willing to donate ₱61.8 million ($1 million), on top of a ₱928,372.50 ($15,000) fee, to the US government can gain residency. Several European nations, such as Greece and Portugal, also have their own golden visa programs. For Greece, you can invest ₱17.9 million (€250,000) in a property in Athens, located in the upscale Kastella neighborhood overlooking the Port of Mikrolimano. In exchange, you receive a five-year permanent residence visa, family reunification for up to three generations, visa-free Schengen travel, fast processing, and no minimum stay requirement. Meanwhile, Portugal requires a ₱35.9 million (€500,000) in a private equity fund backed by prime real estate in Lisbon’s central business district. This offers a pathway to citizenship in five years with a minimal stay requirement of just seven days per year.
