'Gangnam Style' singer Psy referred to prosecutors on sleeping pills charges
Korean rapper Psy, who rose to global fame through the viral hit song “Gangnam Style,” has been referred to the prosecution on charges related to sleeping pills.
The Seodaemun Police Station in Seoul earlier referred six people—Psy, three medical staff members including a professor and a junior doctor from a university hospital in Seoul, and two company employees—to the prosecution without detention on charges of violating the Medical Service Act.
Psy is accused of receiving prescriptions for sleeping pills and having his manager pick them up on his behalf in violation of the law.
He is alleged to have received the prescriptions at a university hospital in Seoul from 2022 to 2025 without undergoing in-person medical consultation, and then having third parties, such as his manager, pick them up on his behalf, Korean media reported.
The drugs were reported to be intended to treat sleep disorders and depression.
Under Korean law, prescriptions for such drugs cannot be obtained by anyone other than the patient who has received a direct medical examination.
P Nation, Psy’s agency, told Korean media outlet Hankook Ilbo on June 2, "The police investigation into the violation of the Medical Service Act regarding the proxy receipt of sleeping pills has concluded. We will actively cooperate with the prosecution's investigation going forward."
