A live-in caregiver was arrested in Quezon City after allegedly killing an 11-month-old baby girl out of jealousy and exhaustion, then faking a kidnapping report, police said.
The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said the 26-year-old suspect, live-in partner of the victim’s uncle, initially reported on the evening of May 30 that two men had entered their rented apartment in Barangay Pasong Putik and taken the child.
Police said a follow-up investigation, including CCTV backtracking and verification of the suspect’s account, yielded no evidence of any suspects or a kidnapping incident, prompting authorities to pursue inconsistencies in her statement.
When officers proceeded to the apartment, the suspect initially hesitated to open the unit but later complied, where police detected a foul odor coming from inside.
A search of the residence led to the discovery of the infant’s body inside a sack on the second floor of the apartment, already in a state of decomposition.
QCPD Station 16 commander Lt. Col. Timothy Aniway Jr. said the suspect later confessed during questioning after being confronted with evidence and inconsistencies in her narration.
Investigators said the suspect admitted she acted out of jealousy and exhaustion, claiming she felt overwhelmed in caring for the child and believed her partner was giving more attention to the victim than to their own child.
Police learned she killed the infant on May 29 at around 6 p.m. by banging the child’s head three times into the pavement before placing the body in a sack.
Authorities said the infant had been under the suspect’s care for around three months while the child’s mother was working abroad and the father was in the province.
The suspect is now under the custody of the QCPD Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit and is facing a murder complaint, while the infant’s remains were subjected to autopsy.
