Annual school opening effort
The annual Brigada Eskwela campaign of the Department of Education (DepEd) has long been associated with the Filipino tradition of bayanihan — a collective effort in which communities unite to help one another.
This year’s theme, “Bayanihan sa Paaralan: Nagkakaisa para sa Kaayusan at Kaalaman,” reflects that enduring spirit as schools across the country gear up for the opening of classes.
Together with personnel from the Office of the Vice President (OVP), Duterte participated in school clean-up and preparation activities aimed at making learning spaces safer and more conducive for students.
For the nearly 4,000 learners enrolled at Diosdado P. Macapagal Elementary School, the preparations go beyond routine maintenance.

The school, which serves 3,904 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6, caters largely to children from urban poor communities, where access to comfortable learning environments can significantly affect the classroom experience.
Its 66 classrooms are expected to once again accommodate packed classes when the school year opens, making volunteer-led repairs and maintenance crucial in easing the burden on educators and school personnel.

Resource gaps in schools
According to the OVP, the initiative also seeks to strengthen collaboration among parents, teachers, local government units, private organizations, alumni groups, and community volunteers in support of quality education.
The Vice President’s participation comes as public schools nationwide continue to face challenges such as classroom shortages, aging infrastructure, and limited maintenance resources.
Brigada Eskwela, launched in 2003, has become one of the government’s most visible community-based education programs, relying heavily on volunteerism and private support to help bridge resource gaps in schools.

Beyond the activity in Barangay Tatalon, the OVP earlier distributed cleaning and maintenance materials to San Vicente Elementary School and Pinyahan Elementary School in Diliman, Quezon City.
The office is also set to conduct another Brigada Eskwela activity on June 3 at Gen. Vicente Lim Elementary School in Tondo, Manila.
As classrooms are swept clean and school grounds repaired in time for the return of millions of learners, Brigada Eskwela continues to serve as a reminder that preparing schools is not solely the responsibility of teachers or government agencies, but a shared effort carried by entire communities.
