ZAMBOANGA CITY – Authorities are investigating to determine ownership of some P14.1-million worth of smuggled cigarettes abandoned in Barangay Sangali in this city, the police said Monday.
In a report, the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) said the smuggled cigarettes were recovered on Sunday afternoon outside an unoccupied house in Sitio Malasugat, Barangay Sangali.
The recovery was made after police operatives verified information about the pile of boxes of cigarettes brought to the area.
“No person came forward to claim ownership of the items,” the ZCPO said in its report.
A total of 95 master cases and 38 reams of smuggled cigarettes worth P14.1 million were recovered.
“We are now working to identify the people behind the shipment and tracing how the smuggled cigarettes were transported to Sitio Malasugat,” the ZCPO added.
The smuggled cigarettes were turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition. (PNA)
