Gov't eyes 2nd tranche of cash aid as 1.6 M transport workers receive fuel assistance
DSWD
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said the government is assessing whether another round of fuel assistance will be needed for the transport sector after more than 1.6 million public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and transport workers nationwide received cash aid.
As of June 1, DSWD has disbursed ₱8.214 billion in cash relief assistance to 1,642,837 beneficiaries under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS). Each beneficiary received ₱5,000.
We continue to conduct payouts to ensure that all qualified beneficiaries receive cash aid in accordance with President Marcos Jr.'s directive to assist PUV drivers affected by rising fuel prices),” DSWD Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Irene Dumlao said on Monday, June 1.
Despite the ongoing payouts, Dumlao said the government is studying whether a second tranche of assistance will be necessary as fuel prices have yet to fully stabilize.
The government is also assessing whether a second batch of cash relief assistance will be needed for the transport sector since fuel prices have not yet fully returned to previous levels, and any decision will still depend on how the situation develops in the coming days),” she said.
Based on the department's monitoring report, tricycle drivers accounted for the largest share of beneficiaries, with 1,120,845 recipients receiving a combined ₱5.604 billion in assistance.
Service delivery riders followed with 248,660 beneficiaries who received a total of ₱1.243 billion.
DSWD also reported that 116,301 public utility jeepney drivers received ₱581.505 million in financial assistance.
Meanwhile, 88,769 motorcycle taxi drivers received ₱443.845 million, while 68,262 transport network vehicle service (TNVS) drivers were provided ₱341.310 million in aid.
DSWD has coordinated with transport network companies to facilitate the efficient distribution of assistance, particularly during special payout activities in Metro Manila.
Dumlao said the partnership helped streamline the payout process and improve the delivery of assistance to qualified beneficiaries.
The distribution of payouts has become more organized and convenient because of the improved coordination between the DSWD and various transport network companies, which helped speed up the entire process),” she said.
