The camp of Vice President Sara Duterte is expected to submit its response to the articles of impeachment before the Senate on Monday, June 1, the final day of the deadline set by the impeachment court.
Lawyer Michael Poa, one of Duterte’s legal counsels, said the camp has yet to decide whether to file the response personally before the Senate or submit it electronically via email, according to a report on “24 Oras Weekend” aired on May 31.
Based on the media advisory released by the Senate on May 31, Duterte only has until June 1, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., to formally answer the impeachment complaint lodged against her.
The Office of the Vice President (OVP) earlier confirmed receiving the summons from the Senate impeachment court on May 20.
Prior to this, Duterte’s defense team acknowledged that the Senate had convened as an impeachment court and assured the public that they would comply with constitutional procedures.
“We will comply and file the appropriate response in accordance with the Constitution and applicable rules,” the defense team earlier said. However, the lawyers declined to discuss details of their legal strategy, citing respect for the ongoing proceedings.
The impeachment process against Duterte has continued to draw nationwide attention amid heightened political tensions between the Vice President and some House lawmakers.
In previous interviews released by the OVP, Duterte denied the allegations against her and insisted that the impeachment complaints lacked evidence.
In a video interview on May 7, the Vice President also rejected claims that lawmakers fear political retaliation if they refuse to support the impeachment complaints against her, saying she is “not vindictive.”
Duterte likewise questioned whether the impeachment push was truly about accountability or politically motivated due to her disagreements with the current administration.
Duterte earlier claimed that some politicians were allegedly “making money” by using her name amid impeachment discussions after reports surfaced that more than 180 lawmakers could supposedly support impeachment proceedings once the matter reaches the plenary.
The Vice President further admitted that several political allies may have distanced themselves from her amid the controversy, but emphasized that public support continues to strengthen her resolve.
Duterte’s impeachment trial is scheduled to begin on July 6.
