Several provinces may experience heavy rainfall of up to 100 millimeters due to the southwest monsoon or habagat, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned on Saturday, May 30.
In Weather Advisory No. 3 issued at 5 p.m., the agency said accumulated rainfall of 50 to 100 millimeters (mm) is expected over Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, and Antique from Sunday afternoon, May 31, until Monday afternoon, June 1.
PAGASA said the same amount of rainfall is forecast over Bataan, Batangas, Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Antique, Iloilo, and Guimaras from Monday afternoon, June 1, until Tuesday afternoon, June 2.
It noted that forecast rainfall may be higher in mountainous and elevated areas due to terrain effects.
As such, the state weather bureau warned that the effects of the rains could be aggravated in some areas by significant antecedent rainfall or rain that has already accumulated from previous weather systems.
“The public disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property,” PAGASA said.
The agency added that its Regional Services Divisions may issue Heavy Rainfall Warnings, Thunderstorm Advisories, and other severe weather information specific to their areas of responsibility as necessary.
PAGASA officially declared the onset of the southwest monsoon earlier on Saturday, saying the weather system is expected to bring occasional to frequent rains and thunderstorms, particularly over the western sections of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
