The Department of Education (DepEd) is pushing for intensified efforts to expand access to international scholarships and exchange programs for public school teachers, saying global exposure is a necessary investment in improving the country’s basic education system.
During the Teach Beyond Borders: Global Scholarships and Exchange Fair at the SEAMEO INNOTECH on Friday, May 29, DepEd gathered scholarship providers, exchange program partners, and public school teachers to provide centralized access to global learning opportunities.
In a statement, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara said Filipino teachers must be given opportunities to gain international perspectives and best practices that can be applied in local classrooms.
“We must continually equip our teachers with global perspectives so they can bring innovative practices back to our local classrooms,” he said.
“These international scholarships and exchanges are not just rewards for exemplary service, but necessary investments in the future of our learners,” he went on.
The initiative, according to DepEd, seeks to address long-standing challenges in accessing information on international scholarships by creating a one-stop platform where teachers can easily navigate application procedures, eligibility requirements, and documentary requirements.
The agency said the program supports President Marcos’ directive to enhance the global competitiveness of Filipino workers and raise education standards across the country.
DepEd Assistant Secretary Jerome Buenviaje said international scholarship and exchange opportunities allow educators to strengthen their expertise, broaden their perspectives, and contribute more effectively to improving learning outcomes.
“Through these scholarships, teachers gain access to training programs, graduate studies, and even international exposure,” Buenviaje said during the fair.
Buenviaje added that scholarship processes have become more structured, transparent, and equitable under Department Memorandum (DM)-OULS-2026-18.
Various partner organizations participated in the event through exhibits and presentations outlining available scholarship and exchange opportunities for teachers.
Likewise, the program featured alumni of international scholarship and exchange initiatives who shared how exposure to global best practices helped shape their teaching approaches, leadership skills, and professional development.
Among them were Ma. Lourdes Rola, a Master Teacher II and participant in the 2025 Korean-Philippines Teaching Exchange Program; Raymart N. Santiago, a Teacher II from the 2025 Spanish Foreign Language ELE Program; Levy Acuña, a Principal III who joined the Japan International Cooperation Agency’s Knowledge Co-Creation Program on Science and Math Education in 2017; Lawrence Icasiano, a Public Schools District Supervisor who completed the SEAMEO Regional Language Centre Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program in 2019; and Vonerich Berba, a DepEd Education Program Specialist II and recipient of the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Scholarship for 2024-2025.
DepEd said it considers international scholarships and exchange programs as key tools for educational improvement, with returning scholars expected to share global best practices and help strengthen teaching and learning in schools and communities nationwide.
