PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur — Calabarzon dethroned Davao Region, 79-62, to capture the 2026 Palarong Pambansa boys high school basketball crown at the Datu Lipus Makapandong–Governor Democrito O. Plaza Sports Complex here on Saturday, May 30.
Powered by Dairick Duterte’s 21-point outing, the Calabarzon dribblers from St. John Wort’s Integrated School built a commanding third-quarter cushion, with the guard's consecutive paint baskets stretching the lead to 13 in the third period that put the game firmly in control.
“Sobrang saya po dahil hindi ko po akalain na ichi-cheer ako ng crowd dahil hindi po ako taga dito. Sikat na sikat po yung Davao na kalaban namin sa championship,” said Duterte.
It was Calabarzon’s first title in 10 years, last winning it in 2016 against Central Luzon.
Davao Region, represented by Ateneo de Davao, threatened after Matt Cayetano sparked a later rally with back-to-back triples that cut its deficit to six, 62-68, before Calabarzon answered back with seven straight point to restore order and eventually clinch the victory.
“Sobrang halaga po nito [championship] kasi mababago po nito ‘yung buhay ko—hindi na po ako mamaliitin ng ibang tao,” said Rainheart Panaligan, who registered 17 points.
Earlier, NCR clinched the bronze after besting Central Luzon, 81-74.
In the distaff side, NCR clobbered Eastern Visayas, to retain the crown while Northern Mindanao settled for the bronze after a 60-57 win over Davao Region.
In high school boys 3x3 basketball, Ilocos Region thumped Western Visayas for the gold medal, 21-14, while NCR settled for the bronze after squeaking past CARAGA, 21-19. Western Visayas blasted Central Luzon, 20-11, to win the distaff side.
Calabarzon also showed its might in baseball after dumping Eastern Visayas, 8-3, for the secondary boys gold medal.
In sepak takraw, SOCCSKSARGEN powered its way to the gold medal after defeating Caraga Region.
As of 3:00 p.m., NCR stays atop the medal race with 83 gold, 63 silver, and 63 bronze medals, followed by CALABARZON with 51 gold, 46 silver, and 51 bronze medals. Western Visayas holds third (29-32-36), while Caraga sits at fourth (28-18-36). Central Luzon ranks fifth with 27 gold, 18 silver, and 33 bronze medals.
