Warm lights, a crucifix platform, the sound of the orchestra’s overture, and a woman dancing. Then, the ensemble rushed from the audience area, shouting and eager to present the Messiah onstage. Those were the elements that welcomed the audience to “Jesus Christ Superstar” as soon as the curtain rose.

Created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, the stage musical is the latest offering at Theatre at Solaire in Parañaque City. Its story is loosely based on Jesus’ final days, from his arrest and trial to his crucifixion and death. Much of the story focused on his relationship with Judas and Mary Magdalene, as well as his conflicting journey toward fulfilling God’s will.

On paper, “Jesus Christ Superstar” is a show that would definitely delight Filipinos. It’s about faith and religion delivered through a rock opera, with performers belting their hearts out. In fact, a year after its Broadway debut, a localized film adaptation was produced featuring Filipino singer and actor Victor Wood. Through the years, Filipinos have seen many versions of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” but what makes the 2026 production notable is that it is an internationally touring staging.

At the helm of the tour are director Timothy Sheader and choreographer Drew McOnie. Leading the international cast are Luke Street as Jesus and Javon King as Judas, joined by celebrated Filipina thespian Gab Pangilinan as Mary Magdalene.

Apart from his singing prowess, Luke is very charismatic on stage, a trait that is important in portraying a commanding and influential figure like Jesus. He is powerful whenever he sings his numbers, but in the play’s quieter moments, he delivers the human side of the Messiah with vulnerability and emotional restraint. Javon left no stone unturned in fleshing out Judas on stage, delivering a layered performance that captures his character’s inner conflicts, frustrations, and despair. On the other hand, Gab is like a lullaby amid the chaos. Her presence and voice provide softness and gentleness, balancing the story’s overall tone.

Among our favorite parts of the musical are Jesus’ trial with Pontius Pilate and his moments with King Herod. Ethan Hardy Benson’s performance as Pontius Pilate was raw, edgy, and pure rock and roll, while Erich W. Schleck’s King Herod was campy, fun, and delightfully drag-inspired.

Bringing this particular masterpiece to Manila was not just about delivering West End–caliber entertainment. For GMG Productions CEO Carlos Candal, the Manila staging is about striking a deep, intrinsic chord within the local culture.

Overall, “Jesus Christ Superstar” at Theatre at Solaire is a striking blend of rock music, bold staging, and emotional storytelling that reimagines a familiar biblical narrative for a modern audience. While its creative choices may challenge traditional expectations, the production succeeds in highlighting the humanity, conflict, and complexity at the heart of its characters.
