New girl group MEI MEI arrives with debut single 'Telebong'
The P-pop landscape continues to expand with the arrival of MEI MEI, an eight-member girl group introduced under Groovy Garden Records, a new music label under Pulp Group.
The group officially debuted on May 27 at Skydome, SM North EDSA, unveiling their first single “Telebong” alongside a concept built around individuality, positivity, and self-expression.
MEI MEI is composed of Alexa, Jhamayka, Ada, Aerise, Thea, Jessie, Yuni, and Dina. Each member carries a distinct persona—Spark, Cool, Dolly, Sweet, Princess, Power, Groovy, and Diva—reflecting their personalities while forming a unified identity that highlights the diversity of the modern Filipina.
The group name is inspired by a Filipino naming tradition with repeating syllables such as “Jan-Jan” and “Len-Len,” a cultural reference intended to evoke warmth, familiarity, and connection.
“We wanted something that feels instantly familiar to Filipinos—something that feels like home the moment you hear it,” member Jhamayka said.
Rather than focusing on competition within the growing P-pop scene, MEI MEI said their aim is to share music, joy, and authenticity through their own identity and style.
“We don’t stick to one image or personality. We’re encouraged to show our true selves—no pretension, just authenticity,” the group said.
Pulp Group executives Happee Sy-Go and Vernon Go said MEI MEI was created to spotlight individuality and positivity, emphasizing a creative direction centered on joy and connection.
Happee said the group was envisioned as a source of happiness for audiences.
“MEI MEI is about happiness. We just want them to sing and dance and share that feeling of joy,” she said. “When people watch and listen to them, we hope they feel light, free, and happy.”
Vernon added that the group’s strength lies in its diversity.
“Each member exudes a unique character, showing how diverse personality and beauty can be,” he said.
“Telebong” leads the group's upcoming EP “HELLO PO,” which will feature additional tracks scheduled for release in July and August.
Leader Jessie said the group hopes to use their platform to represent young Filipinas and share relatable stories through music.
“Our main goal is to share our music and represent young Filipinas. We want to use this platform to tell our individual stories,” she said.
Member Thea shared that their debut marks the culmination of years of training and preparation.
“It’s really fulfilling because we worked so hard for this. Everything we went through was worth it,” she said.
MEI MEI closes its debut introduction with a message centered on authenticity, joy, and openness in expressing oneself.
“Huwag kayo matakot magpakatotoo. Be one of us. Be MEI MEI,” the group said.
