Education Secretary Sonny Angara has ordered the implementation of the 2026 National Oplan Balik Eskwela (OBE) in preparation for the opening of classes for school year 2026-2027 on June 8.
The nationwide OBE activities will run from June 1 to 11 to assess school readiness, including infrastructure and logistical requirements, the Department of Education (DepEd) said.
The program will focus on speeding up enrollment, addressing public concerns, and coordinating with government agencies and the private sector.
“Sinisiguro natin, kasama ang iba’t ibang ahensya ng pamahalaan, na magiging ligtas, maayos, at walang aberya ang pagbabalik-aral ng ating mga mag-aaral (We are ensuring, together with various government agencies, that students’ return to school will be safe, orderly, and smooth),” Angara said in a statement.
During the period, public school teachers will not be assigned administrative or office work so they can focus on preparing classrooms.
DepEd said 16 government offices under an inter-agency task force will support the department in its logistical and operational needs for schools nationwide.
These include the Department of the Interior and Local Government, Philippine National Police, Department of Health, and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority for security, health services, and traffic management.
The Department of Energy will monitor power supply, while the Department of Trade and Industry will handle consumer protection concerns during the opening period.
The Department of Transportation will coordinate student travel by land and sea, while the Department of Information and Communications Technology and the National Telecommunications Commission will maintain communications and internet services.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, through the Office of Civil Defense, will be on standby for weather-related and other emergencies, while the Presidential Communications Office will handle information dissemination.
Utility firms Meralco and the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System have also committed to maintaining stable electricity and water supply in schools.
The Department of Public Works and Highways will lead road repairs and drainage clearing, while the Department of Social Welfare and Development will monitor beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program during the school opening period.
DepEd said preparations for school openings are conducted year-round to reduce disruptions and improve service delivery.
