ILOILO CITY—Uncertainty loomed over the P7.78-billion Boracay bridge project after two conflicting pronouncements were issued.
Residents and stakeholders in Malay town and the rest of Aklan province are awaiting if San Miguel Corp. (SMC) will continue with the proposed 2.54-kilometer bridge project intended for world-famous Boracay Island.
Many were initially elated when Aklan Gov. Jose Enrique “Joen” Miraflores announced on Wednesday, May 27, that the bridge project will be scrapped by San Miguel Holdings Corp. (SMHC), the infrastructure arm of SMC.
According to Miraflores, SMC President and Chief Executive Officer Ramon Ang told local officials that the project will no longer push through due to massive opposition.
Hours after, GMA News Online reported that Ang denied Miraflores’ claim. Ang said it was “not true” and does not know why local officials made the statement.
During the consultative meeting in Boracay, Miraflores recounted a May 13 meeting with Ang at SMC corporate office in Pasig City.
The governor said he was accompanied by Aklan Rep. Florencio “Joeben” Miraflores, Aklan Rep. Jesus “Jess” Marquez, and Aklan Provincial Board Member Reynado “Boy” Quimpo.
Quimpo issued a statement after Ang’s denial.
A lawyer and former vice governor of Aklan, Quimpo recounted the meeting. “After about more than one hour of interaction, sensing, and hearing our steadfast stand against the Boracay bridge project, Mr. Ramon S. Ang categorically and repeatedly declared ‘kung talagang ayaw ninyo, hindi ko na itutuloy ang project (If you don’t like, I will not push through with the project,’” said Quimpo on Thursday, May 28.
“After that, all four of us from Aklan shook hands with Mr. Ramon S. Ang and thanked him for his decision to no longer pursue the project,” Quimpo added.
In a Facebook post, Quimpo said two SMC executives were also present during the meeting and one of them was lawyer Jing Jing de Castro.
Quimpo thanked President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for intervening and Ang for “listening to the people of Aklan.”
