The Philippine boxing team ramped up its preparations for the 2026 Asian Games after capturing four gold and one bronze medal in tournaments held in Serbia and the Netherlands over the past few weeks.
Clark Vicera and Riza Pasuit led the charge for the Filipino fighters by topping their respective divisions in the 63rd Belgrade Winner Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Tournament, before Vicera sustained his winning form and bagging another gold in the Eindhover Box Cup in the Netherlands alongside Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Carlo Paalam.
In Serbia, Vicera opened up his campaign with a unanimous decision win against 2024 Youth World Boxing Championships bronze medalist Dias Berikbay of Kazakhstan before following suit with triumphs over Ibrahim Aljohani of Saudi Arabia and Nurzat Ongarov of Kazakhstan.
He claimed the men’s 50kg gold medal at the expense of Salih Samet Oruc of Turkiye via a 4-1 split decision.
Pasuit, for her part, edged Ece Asude Ediz of Turkiye for the women’s 57kg gold medal after starting her campaign in the quarterfinals. She did not lose a single scorecard throughout her campaign, earning unanimous decision wins over Victoria Vergos of Canada and Areti Stergiou of Greece on her way to the gold-medal bout. Paul Julyfer Bascon added a bronze medal to the PH team’s haul in the men’s 60kg division.
A few days later in the Netherlands, Vicera continued his rampage and beat Ruslan Bednychenko of Ukraine for the gold medal in the same weight category, while Paalam displayed championship experience and ruled the men’s 55kg at the expense of Abdul Burton of England. Paalam highlighted his campaign with a stunning 4-1 split decision victory over 2024 Paris Olympics silver winner Billal Bennama of France in the semifinals.
“This is a sign that we’re heading in the right direction as we look forward to the upcoming Asian Games in September,” said Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) President Marcus Manalo.
