Manila's art crowd gathers for Ivan Co's 'Harbinger Metropolis'
The ongoing exhibit of artist Ivan Co at Gallery C, Level 3 of the Conrad Manila is entitled “Harbinger Metropolis,” and it runs until July 25. The nine items on display are kinetic sculptures that are, in themselves, wonderful pieces to observe and ponder. But what made the experience extra special was arriving early, being approached by Ivan and his wife, Dior, who were there with their daughter, and being given a personal walkthrough of the exhibit by Ivan himself.

An automaton, a gravitram, and pendulum sculptures—the kinetic aspect of his works was fully demonstrated to me as Ivan set his pieces into motion. Whether employing gravity or mechanical aids, the sculptures came to life and became little marvels. They act as symbols of change and portents of what our near future holds; hence, the “harbinger” in the title.
Elizabeth T. Sy was there to support this new show at the Conrad, which is part of SM Hotels and Conventions Corp., the company she heads. Her brother, Hans Sy, also made an appearance, along with Steven Tan, president of SM Supermalls. I hope the public takes advantage of this opportunity to see Ivan’s work up close. A former jeweler, he displays remarkable attention to detail and skillfully incorporates semi-precious stones into his sculptures.
