- Jemay Santiago opens up about depression, grief, and mental health in her new R&B single "1A," a raw and emotional track about self-love, healing, and overcoming anxiety amid online pressure.
Jemay Santiago steps into a more personal and emotionally exposed chapter with her new R&B single “1A,” a track centered on grief, anxiety, and the quiet process of rebuilding self-worth.
Known for her curated online presence as a content creator, Santiago shifts away from polished digital performance and into a more introspective space, where “1A” unfolds as a raw reflection of emotional fatigue and mental strain.
The track explores the pressure of constantly being perceived online while privately dealing with emotional turmoil. Built on subdued, atmospheric R&B production, “1A” leans into restraint rather than spectacle, creating an intimate listening experience that mirrors isolation and self-reflection.
Santiago shared that the song was written during one of the most difficult periods of her life.
“If I were to be raw and vulnerable, I was going through depression. Two years ago, my mom passed away. I felt like a failure. Not just as an artist or a public figure, but also as a daughter,” she said.
Originally titled “MARY1A,” the single later evolved into “1A,” with its concept reflecting a personal reset. The title symbolizes self-prioritization, with “1” representing putting oneself first and “A” signifying a beginning—framing the song as a quiet declaration of starting over through self-care and emotional healing.
Santiago describes her sound as raw, vulnerable, and authentic, which is evident in the emotional honesty that drives the track. Rather than presenting a curated narrative, “1A” focuses on lived experience—grief, uncertainty, and the internal weight of trying to function while struggling mentally.
The artist also shared that she hopes the song resonates with listeners who may be experiencing similar feelings of pressure, loneliness, and self-doubt.
Her message remains simple yet direct: you are not alone.
With her upcoming EP, "Depresyon," 1A” positions Santiago not just as a digital personality, but as an artist opening up about mental health, emotional recovery, and the importance of self-love in the face of anxiety and loss. (Ian Ureta)
